Derby County 1   George Thorne 37

Manchester United 3    Wayne Rooney 16, Daley Blind 66, Juan Mata 83

Manchester United eased the pressure on Louis Van Gaal after a deserved victory against Derby County in the FA Cup.

Wayne Rooney opened the scoring early on before George Thorne equalised for the hosts.

But second half goals from Juan Mata and Daley Blind were enough to see the visitors comfortably through to the 5th round.

Rooney’s goal was the pick of the bunch, the forward curling a wonderful long range effort inside Scott Carson’s left hand post on 16 minutes.

Paul Clement’s side equalised through Thorne, the forward taking advantage of a gap in United’s defence to receive a pass from Chris Martin and finish neatly past David De Gea.

But in the second half United took a deserved lead through Daley Blind, whose controlled finish from Jesse Lingard’s cross gave United the lead.

The game was then ended by Juan Mata, who slotted home after latching onto Anthony Martial’s pass from the byline.

The result will be a welcome one for the United boss, who had reportedly offered to resign following a home defeat against Southampton last week.

The home side had started nervously, their defensive line sitting very deep and allowing the visitors to dominate possession in the early stages.

The second half was a much more open game, with Derby frequently surging forward and asking questions of United’s defence.

But the result was a deserved one for Louis van Gaal who will be pleased with his side’s energetic performance.
